North and South Carolina are rich in railroad history. Although Norfolk Southern and CSX are the predominate lines, there are also many shortline roads. (NC Shortlines / SC Shortlines) Many of those
shortlines are spinoffs or have been sold outright by a larger railroad.
North Carolina boasts of two sets of "loops" (NS, ex-Southern and CSX, ex-Clinchfield) and the steepest mainline
grade in the United States (Saluda Mountain, 4.7%).
South Carolina boasts of the very first run of a regularly scheduled passenger train in the United States (The Best Friend of Charleston - December 25th, 1830).
This website is dedicated to the railroading pioneers of these two great States. We will honor them here by keeping their works alive and presenting them through the eyes of us in awe of such feats. They, and their way of life, will not be forgotten. We wish for this website to be an ongoing process. Due to the vast amount of railroading information linked to North and South Carolina, it will be updated many times to reflect it's purpose. Feedback is always welcomed. |
